T11 - If Only We Could Make Them Listen!

Geoff Thompson, Experimentus, UK

If we don't give the right information, we can't expect anyone to listen!

In 2008, EuroSTAR looked at the future of software testing, for 2009 this presentation will look at REAL issues we are experiencing NOW that will, if not resolved, have long term implications on our credibility into the future.

In the real world of software testing today, software testers are expected to provide the information needed for project sponsors and managers to make go live decisions. Given this is a key part of our job, why therefore do we often get it so wrong, or are not listened to?

This presentation will use real life practical experiences to help understanding of the issue, looking at examples as varied as the 1986 Challenger disaster to what happened in Heathrow Terminal 5, as well as examples of good and bad information provision from the presenter's actual experiences.

We will also explore why software testers tend to work with little understanding of the goals they should be striving to achieve, and how this impacts their ability to provide the right information at the right time.

Finally we will review some of the tools available today that will help elevate this issue, and leave the attendees with practical tips to enable them to make a difference when they get back to their workplace.

Key Points:

  • Understanding of good and bad information provision
  • The impact of poor information provision
  • Practical tips to help improve information provision
