EuroSTAR Conference Programme Chair 2013
As a Canadian, it's a great honour-and a little odd-to be named
Programme Chair for Europe's largest testing conference. It's an
honour, of course, because of the prestige and the responsibility
of the position. It's odd because I'm Canadian, and Canada has not
joined the European Union... yet. Still, as much as Canada is bound
to look southward towards the giant at the doorstep, Canada has
always looked eastward towards Europe as the origin of so many of
our traditions and our people. Besides, EuroSTAR has long been a
truly global event, with attendees and speakers from all over the
world. Diversity among the participants means a diversity of ideas
and experiences, and diversity is terribly important to our
craft.
Apropos of that, I'm delighted to be joined by a group of
colleagues who bring a diverse set of skills and experience to the
Programme Committee for the 2013 EuroSTAR Conference.

The theme for EuroSTAR 2013 will be "Questioning Testing". Just
as it's our responsibility to question our products in order to
evaluate them, it's also our responsibility to question our own
work and the craft itself. Why do some approaches work well in some
contexts and not so well in others? How can we provide our clients
with a credible account of our work? Can we believe the numbers
that we see in a test report or in a conference presentation? Who
are we to trust, and how do we earn the trust of others? Do the
Grand Truths of Testing stand up to scrutiny? These are the kinds
of questions that every field must ask and answer. They're hard
questions-but hard questions are a lot more interesting than the
easy ones.
Over the next few months, we'll be developing a programme for
the EuroSTAR community to present stories, challenge beliefs, and
make discoveries. Please contact us with your ideas, questions,
comments, or suggestions for EuroSTAR 2013. We invite you to begin
participating now!
